Basil is famously known as the 'king of the herbs'

Basil is restoritive, warming, a mildly sedative herb that lowers fever, relaxes spasms, improves digestion and is effective against internal parasites and bacteria. Basil is a member of the mint family. 

Basil has many types showing different leaf coloration with varying scents and flavours.  All basil is sensitive to frost.

Basil has been a herbal remedy for ages to treat diseases of the brain, heart, lungs and bladder.  It revives vitality (when infused as a tea)

Also used to combat colds & influenza, poor digestion, nausea, abdominal cramps, migraine, insomnia, gastro enteritis, anxiety and exhaustion. 

The leaves are added to salads and used to flavour tomato based dishes, pasta and vegetables.

External Use:

The leaves are dried and used as a snuff to combat headaches and colds.  Also used for acne, loss of smell, insect bites and stings and skin irritations. 

Safety Warnings:

Basil essential oil should not be used during pregnancy or in children under 16 years.  The oil may cause skin irritation in sensitive individuals and should not be used in the bath.


Feed monthly with a general fertilizer like 2.3.2.  Pinch very often as this promotes bushiness and better quality.
